App of the Week: Quartz

Quartz is one of my favorite new apps that I have been using for about a month now, but I absolutely love its interface, which looks almost exactly like Apple’s iMessage.

What is Quartz?

For those of us who spend half our day texting comes a creative new way to stay informed. Every time you open Quartz, you get the news–political, pop culture, and more–in a series of short messages. Tap on links or emoji to jump to the full story, or use a pre-written reply to get the next entertaining summary. Using Quartz feels like a fun conversation with a well-read friend–complete with GIFs, images, and snark comments.

App of the Week: Brit + Co.

What is Brit + Co?

Brit + Co is a new media and commerce company that enables creativity through inspirational content, online classes and do-it-yourself kits. From traditional crafts to high-tech manufacturing, we connect millions of users with makers, designers, chefs, and inventors, together building a community of creativity. Source

They were founded in 2011 by Brit Morin, and currently reach over 10 million people each month. They started out more as a website, brit.co, but also have a very easy to use app that is essential to my day. Their website and app help to inspire each person with content, teach us skills, and give us easy to access tools to start creating and making things that we are passionate about.

An Apple a Day…

Last night I was able to attend a lecture with Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder, that was a part of my Alma Mater’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

A Silicon Valley and philanthropist for more than 30 years, Steve Wozniak helped shape the modern computing industry with his design of Apple’s first line of products, the Apple I and II, and influenced the popular Macintosh.

Making significant investments of both his time and resources in education, he adopted the Los Gatos (California) School District, providing students and teachers with hands-on teaching and donations of state-of-the-art technology equipment.

Wozniak is Chief Scientist for Fusion-io and author of the New York Times best-seller iWoz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It. He’s appeared on television shows Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, Dancing with the Stars and The Big Bang Theory.
