Tech-o Tuesday

Tech-o Tuesday…get it? Like Taco Tuesday. Haha….

This week I am going to discuss a really cool app that can “help you learn about anything from local history to the latest and best places to shop, eat, and have fun.”

fieldtrip

Field Trip is an app brought to us by Google and it is a location-based app. This app allows you to find “cool, hidden and unique things in the world around you.” Make sure to have your notifications on for this app because it works in the background to notify you of something historical and interesting that you are passing. Below is a really nice video to kind of show you what the app is like:

What is really nice about that app is that you don’t have to live in a big city to get the benefits. I live in a suburban area outside of a metro area and I get little tidbits about my town here and there; Field Trip has given me information on a local park, a school, and even a grocery store all from back in the day.

The interface of the app is easy to use and very simplistic. I’m even fond of the color scheme that it has going on. You are able to look at what is around you through the map, and you also have the option to see what is nearby. Since the app works in the background and notifies you every so often when you are passing by something historical, it stores that information in a ‘recent’ section on your app. This comes in handy when you don’t have time to at the app at the moment or if you want to go back and read up on what were by earlier in the day, or even earlier in the week. You also have the option to ‘favorite’ items and that is stored in a ‘favorites’ section.

You do have the ability to adjust your notification settings and can even turn them all the way off if you find it rather annoying. The app also offers a ‘speak’ option to talk to you and you can have this set to talk only if you have your headphones in. This speak option comes in handy when you are in the car because the app can detect that you are driving, so it will ‘talk’ about interesting places nearby.

I’m personally excited to have this app for when I go to Nashville next month. I would recommend downloading this app if you are going on vacation somewhere soon because you never know what you’ll discover and it could take you on an epic adventure. Who knows!

*This app is available for free through Android and iOS
