App of the Week: Quartz

Quartz is one of my favorite new apps that I have been using for about a month now, but I absolutely love its interface, which looks almost exactly like Apple’s iMessage.

What is Quartz?

For those of us who spend half our day texting comes a creative new way to stay informed. Every time you open Quartz, you get the news–political, pop culture, and more–in a series of short messages. Tap on links or emoji to jump to the full story, or use a pre-written reply to get the next entertaining summary. Using Quartz feels like a fun conversation with a well-read friend–complete with GIFs, images, and snark comments.

Personally, I try to stay on top of the news everyday, but that can be hard to do when there is so much going on in the world and so little time. I really want to know what is going on because I hate being that person who is completely in the background and has no idea what is even going on in the world. Unfortunately, most of my news comes from Facebook because somehow that has turned into even more of a news outlet than I want it to be.

According to The Verge, the company believes that the app’s strengths are: properly curating the news, making it consumable, and delivering it to you quicklySource

“There are elements of that idea still in there, which is obviously the notifications, but also providing a Today widget, and a [Apple] Watch complication,” Seward says. “There are ways to get value out of the app without even opening it, which we think is crucial.” Source

Getting down to what the app has to offer are some great and simple features:
• Notifications that are relevant and fun. You decide which alerts to receive, and we won’t      buzz your phone unless it’s really, really important.
• On the Today screen, view our most interesting chart of the moment.
• Apple Watch owners, gauge the markets with an emoji on your watch face.
• No more news? Relax. We’ll give you a quiz or something else to do.

I’m a huge fan of GIFS, so I love that they incorporate them into their app. It gives the news a more fun and somewhat relatable feel. They also use emoji combinations that go along with the story that you can click to further read what the headline was all about. It definitely seems like a good app for people who maybe don’t care to pay attention to the news or just think ideas and everything get too jumbled when reading a really long article. Quartz helps to bring forth what is important and if you feel like reading up on this topic, you can always click through to the actual article.

I highly recommend downloading this app because it is beautiful and who knows? Maybe you can use all of this new information that read to good use and make yourself the life of the party at your next gathering!
